Hippity Hop Easter Trot 5k

We visited Central Park (not New York) this morning for our first Spring run of the year….and even Furry B came along.  Central Park is located in North Denver in an area known as Stapleton.  The park is spacious – over 80 acres! – with spectacular views of the Rockies.  It is the 3rd largest park in Denver.  The park sits on the site of the old Stapleton International Airport. The control tower is still standing just west of the park. The community is still debating on how to make use of the tower and hope to have a plan by year end.  The Stapleton Airport was Denver’s primary airport from 1929 to February 27, 1995 when the last airplane departed. Click here to view a pictorial history of the Stapleton Airport.

It was perfect weather (as usual) for a race; and the Easter Bunny even competed in the Kid’s Fun Run race. Our 5k course was “flat and fast” which made for a fun morning run.  Furry B loves to run! (Three things at the park today that Furry B does not love include people in costumes, small children, and modes of transport with wheels aka tricycles, bikes, skateboards.)

Furry B is a competitor - He completed his first 5k!

Polar Bear 5k

I’m not one to make New Year’s Resolutions…but I did decide to make a Goal for this year – To participate in a 5k each month of 2012.

Our New Year’s Eve race provided me with some much needed motivation that it was time to get in shape.  So here we go….Our first race of the year was the Polar Bear 5k held at Washington Park.  This was the same course that we ran on New Year’s Eve.  Even though we had hoped to run a new trail, this course is flat and great for beginners….and we were able to see how much our race times had improved since last month.  J “jogged” with me for about the first quarter mile and then he was off to race.  I held my steady pace the entire course and finished at 34:35 minutes – a full 5 minutes faster than my first 5k last month!

We Did It For the T-shirt and Fish Taco

2011 was a great year.  A year full of surprises and many changes.  So, exactly what is the best way to end such an eventful year?…By running my first 5k!  The New Year’s Eve Resolution 5K (presented by Wahoo’s Fish Taco) in Denver was a great way to wind up our year.

The event was crowded with several hundred people even though temps were in the cool 30s.  At the start line we were surrounded by racers, families, kids, strollers, friends….there was no shortage of runners for this race.  As this was a spur of the moment decision, I had not trained at all for this event…and the last time I had even ran anywhere near 3 miles was over 10 years ago!  But I knew I had J – the great motivator – with me. 🙂  J also reminded me that the fastest finishers would have the freshest tacos.

Slow and steady wins the race…or at least finishes the race.  I ran the entire course, except for a quick 1 minute shoe tie break.  J stayed close by and serenaded me with USMC cadences whenever my motivation started lagging.  After 39.35 minutes, we reached the finish line!  Victory is so sweet.  Now, where is my taco?!

I predict that more 5ks are in store for us in 2012!
