A Meeker Visit with Harvey Wallbanger

Welcome to Meeker!

After a long Friday evening drive on I-70 in the snow, we arrived in Meeker, Colorado for a weekend visit.  Escaping the cold ‘teen temps in Denver, we enjoyed unusually warm 50 degree weather in Meeker. With only a dusting of snow on the ground, it was hard to tell that it was the middle of winter.  But no matter the weather, we were here on a mission – to build our new mobile camp site.

We love our roof top tent, but once you set up camp you are unable to drive your vehicle.  So J came up with a great solution; to mount the tent on our ATV trailer and make it more off road capable with a new heavy duty axle and 16 inch all-terrain tires.  Luckily, we have good connections in Meeker and they just happen to be handy with a welder, so off to Meeker we went.  The weekend was spent hard at work modifying the trailer and creating a base for the tent.  After a day and and a half, the modification is well on its way, but a few more trips will be in our future to finish it.  This summer we plan to be camping in style, have room for our ATV and still have the Cruiser available for adventure.

Our visit wasn’t all work for J, we visited a few local Meeker sheep and enjoyed dinner at the Meeker Bistro.  We also enjoyed a sweet treat from our gracious hosts — a Harvey Wallbanger cake.  This bundt cake is delicious, moist and the recipe is easy.

Harvey Wallbanger

1 pkg. Duncan Hines yellow cake mix
1 small pkg. vanilla instant pudding
1 cup cooking oil
4 eggs
1/2 cup vodka
 3/4 cup orange juice

Mix all ingredients together and beat 4 minutes.  Pour into a well greased and lightly floured bundt pan (9 cup size).  Bake at 350 for 40-45 min. Dust with confectioners sugar and ENJOY.

Snowpocalypse

It’s been over a week since Denver had a record breaking snow storm; but the proof still lingers outside.  Almost 18 inches of snow in Denver closed businesses, schools and even interstate highways!  But snow couldn’t stop us from taking a weekend roadtrip to the Mountains.  We explored Frisco & Breckenridge, tried some Rocky Mountain Oysters, visited a couple of local breweries and enjoyed the beautiful snowy scenery.

Polar Bear 5k

I’m not one to make New Year’s Resolutions…but I did decide to make a Goal for this year – To participate in a 5k each month of 2012.

Our New Year’s Eve race provided me with some much needed motivation that it was time to get in shape.  So here we go….Our first race of the year was the Polar Bear 5k held at Washington Park.  This was the same course that we ran on New Year’s Eve.  Even though we had hoped to run a new trail, this course is flat and great for beginners….and we were able to see how much our race times had improved since last month.  J “jogged” with me for about the first quarter mile and then he was off to race.  I held my steady pace the entire course and finished at 34:35 minutes – a full 5 minutes faster than my first 5k last month!

Ski Day

Eldora Mountain Resort

Fresh Powder = Great Ski Day!

A day off work and lots of fresh snow in the mountains meant it is was time to ski.  So we woke up early, packed a lunch, and headed to the mountains.  This was our first time back to the slopes since my ski lesson a few weeks ago.  Fingers were crossed that I would remember at least a few of the techniques I had learned.  I’m not yet a pro…but I did have a few trick moves during the day, such as a complete 360 (accidental) turn when getting off the ski lift.  However, most of the day was a success and fun!

Take a peek and click here to view Eldora’s snow live on the Web Cam.

It started snowing around noon.

J spent the day getting reacquainted with snowboarding.

On the way home...

Golden, Colorado: Where the West Lives

Since it is in our backyard, we decided to visit the Golden History Center, Astor House and the Clear Creek History Park.  The Golden History Center is located off of 10th and Cheyenne Street in downtown Golden and has lots of historical artifacts dating from the Gold Rush to present day.

Founded during the Gold Rush in 1859, Golden had grown from a dusty mining camp to the capitol of the Colorado territory from 1862 until the capitol seat was moved to Denver in 1867.  The first Tyrannosaurus Rex fossil was found near Golden, it is home to Buffalo Bill’s grave and museum and of course home to the largest single-site brewery on earth, Coors.

During Prohibition beer production stopped and Coors started new lines of business to keep their employees working. Coors began producing porcelain dishes and malted milk, which they sold mainly to Mars candy company.

After visiting the history museum we crossed over Clear Creek and headed to the Astor House.  It was originally built in 1867 and was the original hotel in Golden, serving patrons from miners to Territorial Legislators who met nearby.  In its later years it turned into a boarding house and is now on the National Register of Historic Places.  The Astor House stayed in continuous operation as a boarding and rooming house until 1971.  It has now been restored to it’s late 1800’s historic charm and truly is a walk in the past.  It had one of the first bathtubs in town and for $0.25 a traveler could take a hot bath; I am sure it was appreciated.  From the pull chain toilet to the water pump sink in the kitchen that still works, it is a must see.

A short walk behind the Astor House is the Clear Creek History Park.  This park encapsulates Pioneer life as it was in the 1800’s.  The winters were harsh, life was tough and it took sheer will to survive.  Some of the restored structures that are on display were moved from nearby areas of Golden and ranches outside of town.  There is a schoolhouse, blacksmith shop, cabins, barns and even a root cellar.  On select days there are costumed interpreters who help bring the area to life.  The park is about a block from Washington St, so it is another one for the list if you’re in Golden.

Our walk through Golden’s history would not be complete without a stop at the Old Capitol Grill, one of Colorado’s most historic buildings and best restaurants.  It served as the capitol building to the Colorado Territory and was home to some of the first legislative sessions, until the move to Denver.  Over the years, the building has held many different businesses.  The Colorado School of Mines had early college sessions here, Colorado Central Railroad had offices inside and it served as a mercantile until 1971.  Ok, enough history, it’s time to eat.  K ordered the fish and chips and I had the Buffalo Melt, and both were very good.  I complimented my Buffalo with a Coors Batch 19, which is a pre-prohibition style lager, only available in select cities.  A true sports bar atmosphere in the original Capitol of the Colorado territory: Awesome.

BRONCOS WIN!!

Ok, so we weren’t here during the Mike Shanahan, Shannon Sharpe, Terrell Davis “Orange Crush” and John Elway eras, but we’re here now!!  We’re here during the post Elway era with Tim Tebow, Champ Bailey, Von Miller, Elvis Dumervil and Demaryius Thomas.  Denver has some great players and a young team and I think there is some exciting times in their future.  It is hard not to become part of the Broncos nation where everyone bleeds ORANGE when you live in Denver.  We have been watching the games every week with all the drama and excitement and have been on the edge of our seats, even during the down times.  It  is so nice to live in an area that doesn’t “blackout” the games because they are not sold out, the Broncos don’t have that problem.  Over 90% of Sports Authority Field at Mile High is sold on a season ticket basis and there is a 7-10 year wait for those…  I guess this is why the tickets are so expensive.  If you have tickets to a game you are not going to, or know someone who does…  LET US KNOW!!  We wanted to go to a few games this year, but didn’t want to pay the price for them.  After the loss to the Kansas City Chiefs last week, luckily the Broncos were able to slide into a playoff slot when the Oakland Raiders lost their game against the San Diego Chargers.  The Broncos were still #1 in their division even with an 8-8 record.  We heard they would be selling tickets at 10am on Monday, January 2nd to the first round of the playoffs where Denver would take on Pittsburgh.  We were on the computer on Ticketmaster and were calling on the phone at 9:55am.  After 35 minutes, we finally got tickets!!

The hype was building all week in and around Denver and most critics had the Broncos losing to the more experienced Steelers with the #1 defense in the country.   With Tebow coming off his worst 3 games in a row during his NFL starting career, even the Bronco’s faithful were skeptical.

It was finally gameday and we decided to use RTD which was a 5 minute drive from our house.  We thought it would be better than paying $30 for parking near the stadium.  K and I packed up and headed for the bus.  We were both really surprised at how easy everything was, even when we arrived at Mile High, everything was very efficient and organized.  As we walked into the stadium, they were handing out orange towels to be waved that said, “Mile High Magic”, we hoped so.  These were handed out in hopes of drowning out the Steelers notorious yellow “Terrible Towels”.  We explored Mile High for a little while, gawked at the crazy Broncos Nation and sneered at the Steelers fans.  We both fit right in, me with my Champ Bailey jersey I got with 4 new Yokohama tires from Discount Tires and K with her Broncos scarf.  We had to dress warm as kickoff was supposed to be in the lower 30’s and it was to get colder as the game went on.  With a little snow on the ground outside, it was perfect weather for a playoff game!

We finished our lap around the stadium and decided to find our seats.  We knew we were in the nose bleed section, so we started climbing.  One of the employees was giving out paper towels to wipe seats with as they were still dusted with snow from the night before.  We got to our seats (click here to see our game view) took some pics and decided to get some good ole’ stadium nourishment; beer, hotdogs and nachos…  When we got back it was about time for the game to start.  We enjoyed the Broncos fight song, the Thunderstorm Skydive Team, the National Anthem sung by Rascal Flatts, the color guard and the F-16 Fighting Falcons flyover before kickoff.  When they built this stadium, they brought the upper seating in by 15 feet from the old stadium, which gives much better visibility of the field.  We would take these seats in a heartbeat again, with no one behind us and easy access to the vendors and bathrooms.

The game started and Denver won the coin toss, they deferred until the 2nd half, so the Steelers got the ball first.  They marched down in consecutive drives and luckily, Denver was able to hold them to two field goals.  Denver’s offense was quiet during the first quarter, but the whole team came to play in the 2nd quarter.  The Broncos scored 20 points, which had been their weakest quarter all year and were able to keep the Steelers from scoring again until the 3rd.  With the game knotted up at 23 at the end of the 4th quarter, the game clock counted down to Over Time.  The Referees explained the new OT rules and 11 seconds later, the game was over, BRONCOS WIN!!  Tim Tebow threw an 80 yard TD pass to Demaryius Thomas, who ran down the field towards the south stands, stiff arming Steelers Ryan Mundy and into the end zone to seal the Broncos victory.  The stadium went absolutely crazy.  You could hear nothing but the crowd roar, with high fives from all directions and then the chant: TE-BOW, TE-BOW.  It really was incredible, I have never been to a game that was that exciting and filled with emotion.  The game was over and no one wanted to leave, everyone refused to let go and we were lucky enough to be part of the biggest game yet!  As we finally made our way back to ground level, down the walkway, you could hear nothing but yelling, screaming and chanting “Let’s Go Broncos” with orange towels being waved everywhere.  We made it back to the bus and K said, “how are we going to sleep?”.  This was her first NFL game and I think we picked the right one.  John Elway had “The Drive” and Tim Tebow now has the “The Play”.

Think she is ready for a New England road trip??

We Did It For the T-shirt and Fish Taco

2011 was a great year.  A year full of surprises and many changes.  So, exactly what is the best way to end such an eventful year?…By running my first 5k!  The New Year’s Eve Resolution 5K (presented by Wahoo’s Fish Taco) in Denver was a great way to wind up our year.

www.resolution5k.com

The event was crowded with several hundred people even though temps were in the cool 30s.  At the start line we were surrounded by racers, families, kids, strollers, friends….there was no shortage of runners for this race.  As this was a spur of the moment decision, I had not trained at all for this event…and the last time I had even ran anywhere near 3 miles was over 10 years ago!  But I knew I had J – the great motivator – with me. 🙂  J also reminded me that the fastest finishers would have the freshest tacos.

Slow and steady wins the race…or at least finishes the race.  I ran the entire course, except for a quick 1 minute shoe tie break.  J stayed close by and serenaded me with USMC cadences whenever my motivation started lagging.  After 39.35 minutes, we reached the finish line!  Victory is so sweet.  Now, where is my taco?!

I predict that more 5ks are in store for us in 2012!
